Why is back pain so prevalent in our society? According to a published Osteopath, Philip Beach, a major factor is our lack of repose on the floor! Beach's theory is that there must be rest after movement and the body best rests with archetype positions including kneeling, squatting and sitting cross legged. In fact, Beach states that these repose positions are necessary to help the bio-mechanical structure to stay healthy as they counter the stresses of standing. Observing a child is always the best way to understand how we should be able to move as adults. Watch how a child easily squats for long periods and then can go to standing with minimal effort!
Of course, if sitting on the floor is new to you and you already have knee, back or hip pain it can be near impossible to regain these natural reposes. However, there is help at hand. Through careful treatment, acupuncture can be used to loosen those tight bound muscles that are preventing you from moving naturally. Unfortunately, although I can get you moving again - getting back onto the floor is your job. But just think - it's childs play :-)
